Types of Instructor Licenses in Nevada

To become an Instructor in Nevada, you must already hold a Nevada license.

You must be enrolled at a licensed school offering a Student Instructor or Provisional Instructor program.

You cannot enroll yourself in either program.

Please contact schools in your area to inquire about available instructor programs.

Student Instructor License
(NRS 644A.435)

Allows individuals to train as instructors under supervision while completing required hours.

  • Must hold a valid Nevada license in cosmetology, hair design, esthetics, advanced esthetics, or nail technology.

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.

  • Complete 700 hours of training as a student instructor in a licensed school offering a student-instructor program.

  • $65.00 enrollment payment that MUST be submitted by the school.

Provisional Instructor License
(NRS 644A.415)  

Allows individuals to train as instructors while completing required hours. 

  • Must hold a valid Nevada license in cosmetology, hair design, esthetics, advanced esthetics, or nail technology.

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.

  • Complete 500 hours of instructor training in a licensed school offering a student-instructor program.

  • Have at least one year of verifiable work experience.

  • $95.00 enrollment payment that MUST be submitted by the school.

Instructor License
(NRS 644A.420)

Authorizes individuals to independently instruct in their licensed field.

  • Must hold a valid Nevada license in cosmetology, hair design, esthetics, advanced esthetics, or nail technology.

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED. 

  • Be at least 18 years old and of good moral character.

  • Complete 700 hours as a student instructor or 500 hours as a provisional instructor in a licensed, approved school. 

  • Pass both a theory examination and a 25-question Nevada law exam with a score of 75% or higher.

  • Submit a $70 license payment for a 2-year license or a $140 license payment for a 4-year license.

Additional Information

  • Pursuant to NRS 644A.415, a student instructor or provisional instructor license expires upon completion of the program hours or 1 year after the date of issuance, whichever occurs first.

  • The Board may grant an extension of not more than 45 days to those licensees who have applied to the Board for examination as instructors and are awaiting examination.

  • Licensees are not required to take the Nevada Law exam if they have passed the exam within the last 10 years.

License Renewal & Continuing Education 

Renewal Period

  • Every 2 for $70 OR 4 years for $140

Continuing Education Requirements

  • 30 hours when renewing a license that was issued for 2 years

OR

           60 hours when renewing a license that was issued for 4 years

prior to submitting a renewal form for review and approval.

  • You are submitting CEUs for the amount of time your last license was issued for.

           For example, if you were issued a license for 2 years, you must account for the

           30 hours of CEUs you completed during the time frame that the license was issued.
