If I enroll and begin a program at a cosmetology school, am I allowed to switch programs? (Example: From nail technology to cosmetology, from cosmetology to esthetician, etc.)

Refer to the contract that was signed when you enrolled in school and talk to your registrar. You may be eligible for a credit of hours towards the new program. A letter of credit would include the total amount of hours that would be usable towards the new program you enroll in, if allowed by the school.

I am not happy at the school I am currently attending. Am I allowed to transfer my hours to another school in Nevada?

Refer to the contract that was signed when you enrolled in school and talk to your registrar. Confirm that you will be eligible to transfer the hours you have earned. Contact the school you are interested in attending, inform them that you have already completed a certain amount of hours and would like to transfer to their school. Keep in mind that some schools may not accept any or all of the hours you have earned. When enrolling at a new cosmetology school, contact the board office to request a letter of credit to be sent to the new school. This will allow you to complete the enrollment process.

The school that I am attending is requiring that the students clean the school during the day and at the end of the day. Is this allowed?

Refer to the contract that was signed when you enrolled in school. You are enrolled in a course that is educating you in safety, sanitation, and infection prevention. Keeping the school clean prevents unsanitary conditions and also any type of accidents, just like in a salon.

I feel I will not be graded fairly when it is time for me to take my practical exam at my school. Is it possible for me to take my practical at another school or the State Board office?

Although the school you are attending is responsible for administering the practical exams, we at the Board Office will accommodate you as best as we can. We encourage talking to your Director of the school and voice any concerns you may have.

I am currently a student at school of cosmetology but I will be moving to a rural area in Nevada. Can the hours I completed in school be credited towards an apprenticeship?

Hours are not transferable towards an apprenticeship program. You cannot use hours earned in school towards an apprenticeship and hours earned during an apprenticeship cannot be transferred to a school.

Do I have to complete my practical exam at the school I attended?

Yes, the practical exam cannot be taken at another school and should be completed at the school of attendance. If you have concerns about your school completing your practical exam or your school’s practical exam schedule, please contact the Board office.

Can a school deduct hours earned by a student as disciplinary action?

A school cannot deduct or take away hours earned as disciplinary action or as a form of punishment against an enrolled student.

My school cannot accommodate my current schedule. Is this allowed and what are my options?

Refer to the contract that was signed when you enrolled in school. If the hours of operation of the school change and the school’s schedule no longer accommodates your situation, you should communicate this to your school registrar or director. If this causes you to change schools, confirm that you will be eligible to transfer the hours you have earned. Contact the school you are interested in attending, inform them that you have already completed a certain amount of hours and would like to transfer to their school. Keep in mind that some schools may not accept any or all of the hours you have earned. Can I advertise to the public the services that I offer at the school?

Yes, advertising the services provided by you, a student, at a school of cosmetology is permitted. You must express that you are a student and not licensed. Any advertisement relating to the practice of cosmetology at a school must list the name of the school as it appears on the license and the license number of the school. It is unlawful to advertise in any manner that is misleading or inaccurate.

I currently have a nail technologist, esthetician, or hair design license, but I would like to go to school for cosmetology. Can I transfer hours from these programs towards a cosmetology program?

Yes, a nail technologist or student of nail technology will receive credit for the actual number of hours taken, with a maximum of 150 hours. An esthetician or student of esthetics will receive credit for the actual number of hours taken, with a maximum of 160 hours. A licensed hair designer or student of hair design will receive credit for the actual number of hours taken.
